They're Here

Will-Go-Anywhere-Friend Rafi and I went to see Guillemots at the un-aptly named Horseshoe tavern last night(a more apt name would be the Ass tavern). This is a British band(Guillemots...not Ass tavern) that is generating lots of buzz in the UK and is the apparent targets of a huge bidding war amongst the big labels. They were fantastic. From them filing onto the stage in a cute mock-ritual single file complete with percussive marching music, to their engergetic performances of their pop gems, to leader Fyfe's unbelievable solo number with only voice and handheld battery-operated keyboard, $12 was a steal to see these up-and-comers live(right in front of the stage!). My feeling is that they won't attain major mainstream success because of their eccentricities...but will attain the maximum popularity that that genre will offer(e.g. The Flaming Lips).

Anyhoo, the other point of this blog post is that I got their autograph on the CD I bought at the show. So I had a camera and my dilemma was whether to get either the autograph or the photo. I didn't really wanna trouble them for both. I think the hard thing about photos is that it's only really worthwhile if you get the whole band together... and these guys scattered as soon as the show was over. And although we probably could have gotten a picture with the leader, Fyfe, I would have preferred the whole band. And if anything, as a guy, I would have preferred a picture with the cute bass player. Still though, I have a twinge of regret because they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and they only wrote a maximum of a dozen on my CD.
