The Googleverse

So in an email conversation with Wendell the topic of Google's Adsense program comes up, which seems to me like a good "pay-for-click" affiliate program, but it gets me to thinking about how overwhelming and ubiquitous the Google machine has become. I remember a few short years ago, I used to have a handful of search engines that I used to find what I needed on the web: Lycos, Infoseek, Yahoo, WebCrawler and all the "Meta" engines that would compile the results of the standard search engines (Meta-crawler was my fave). But with the exception of Yahoo, the rest have been all but eliminated from the landscape. Moreover Google has been verb-ified ("I Google, you Google, we all Google for Google"). But, but, but, but, wait it gets worse; everyone and their uncle has a Google search bar on their web-page. Google Adsense is popping up everywhere as well. Ain't a body that's anybody without a gmail account. Google maps, Google earth, and the newly minted Google Talk.

So in short, it seems like these guys are setting the bar for a large chunk of the internet experience. They seem to do everything faster, better, and at less cost to the consumer. They are, in essence, what Japan was in the 1980s to the home electronics market.

I wonder what these bad-boys wil come up with next. Google iTunes?

So what's Google AdSense? Back in the day my weapon of choice was Alta Vista. I actually still use it for translation every now and then. Then Infoseek, then Lycos. Yahoo! used to be better as well when it used to be more of a categorization site. I used to use it to find the official sites for bands, companies etc.

Still, Google is good. At least based on the search engine and Gmail, they have a good, sound strategy and cool interfaces. Good alternative to Microsoft.

Google iTunes eh? My money's on a Google browser...

Adsense is the Google technology that puts all those "Sponsored Links" on the side of your gmail account. They've opened it up as a revenue stream for other web sites as well.

my guess for google's next big thing: a cell phone photo blog service.

everybody has camera phones these days. anybody can blog. google already owns blogger and it already has photo blogging capability. (they probably leveraged some expertise from picasa for that.)

now the third piece is easy-to-use cell phone integration. done. google already has mobile and SMS services. so i think it'll take them relatively little effort to put together a nice "mobog". everybody already trusts google to do a good job so i suspect it'll be well received. they must've thought of this and i expect them to launch something soon. they'd be fools not to.

and i'm sure they'll make everything integrated with searching, IM, translation, etc. i think it could be really cool. people will take pictures everywhere they go. upload photos to their mobog directly from their phones. write blogs. then everybody will be able to see their travels. (perhaps translated from that person's native language.) it'll be awesome! i mean, we already document our lives WAY more than any previous generation. we just don't share it very widely. this could really be big, i think.

then again, i've envisioned lots of things that never materialize...
