Needs No Fixing
It was a week ago tomorrow that I saw the best concert of my life. And (with maximum pretension) I've seen the Stones and the Spice Girls.
Coldplay. If these guys aren't destined for greatness I don't know who is. I was standing there in mesmerized awe through the entire concert. If it wasn't the triple threat openers of "Square One", "Politik" and "Yellow" that had me practically in tears it was the intimate ensemble renditions of "Green Eyes" and "Till Kingdom Come/Ring of Fire" that brilliantly pulled off intimacy at an amphitheatre or maybe it was the ultra-charismatic Chris Martin with his skips, quips, flailings and wailings in front of the psychedelic video screens or it could possibly have been closing the night with "Fix You". This concert was pure magic start to finish.
I went through hell and back to get to this concert and it did not disappoint. I really don't know what it was that this concert had that trumps all others. Coldplay, I salute you. You will save popular music from its sorry sorry state.
And of course, shout out to Charles who first turned me on to them.

here's the story. i think it was late 2000 and i was in LA. i was driving to work and had my radio tuned to KCRW. a new english band comes on to play some live tunes. apparently they had just released a debut album (parachutes) and were there to promote it. they played the songs acoustically and i was totally blown away. anyway, i got to work before they finished and immediately connected to kcrw.com to continue listening. afterwards, i sent an email to some people about a band i just "discovered" called coldplay.
it turns out that performance was kinda historic. that's when coldplay was "broken" into north america. but i'm not sure it was so pivotal. i mean, they were big in the UK and europe so they might have been big over here nomatter what. who knows.
anyway, i've been trying to dig up that email but it's long deleted.
Two words: "The Man".
To start the trip I got a parking ticket. To end the trip I got a speeding ticket.
Plus bad traffic, and a cold burger at midnight for dinner didn't help.
